What is a good screen time schedule?

Struggling with a good screen time schedule for your kids? You are not alone!

The most common Dutch guideline for screen time is as follows:

  • 6-8 years: 30 minutes at a time, up to 1 hour per day.
  • 8-10 years: maximum 1 to 1.5 hours per day.
  • 10-12 years: maximum 2 hours per day.
  • 12 years and older: maximum 3 hours per day.

These times apply to all screens. The first smartphone of your child will add a(nother) screen with unlimited options. So be aware to set (again) rules about screen time. You can even set a maximum time for each app, if you want to balance or limit the usage during a day.

An option for a weekday smartphone/screen time schedule:

  • Before school: maximum 15 minutes
  • During school: not – unless it is necessary for school
  • After school: maximum 15 minutes
  • Screen time before/after dinner: up to 1 hour as the last moment of the day
  • To bed: phone on sleep mode until morning - not in the bedroom

An option for a weekend schedule:

  • Morning: 15 minutes maximum
  • After Lunch: 30 minutes maximum
  • Screen time before/after meals: up to 1 hour as the last moment of the day
  • To bed: phone on sleep mode until morning - not in the bedroom

p.s. Be aware that the most important part of being able to have a happy & healthy online life comes from the time they are online. So keep talking to each other about what they do when they are online!
